Today, I visited Komyoin Temple, a sub-temple of the famous Tofukuji complex. While most people flock to parks and riverside paths for Sakura (cherry blossoms), Komyoin offers a rare and breathtaking experience: massive cherry blossom arrangements displayed right inside the temple rooms.
Beyond Imagination: A Giant Sakura Arrangement
When people hear “viewing Sakura from indoors,” they usually imagine looking through a window at a garden. At Komyoin, the experience is far more immersive.
The temple features extraordinary, oversized Sakura branches arranged directly inside the halls. Seeing them in person is an absolute shock—the scale is far larger than you’d imagine! Even though it’s indoors, the presence of the blossoms is powerful and majestic.
The flowers are currently in full bloom, harmonizing perfectly with the clean lines of the tatami mats, wooden pillars, and the quiet atmosphere of the temple. It feels like a living piece of art.
The Hashin-tei: A Masterpiece by Mirei Shigemori
Beyond the indoor blossoms, Komyoin is home to the Hashin-tei Garden, designed by the legendary landscape architect Mirei Shigemori.
Known for his bold use of jagged stones and moss, Shigemori’s “Wave Mind Garden” is a must-see for garden enthusiasts. During this season, there are also cherry trees blooming in the garden itself. This creates a stunning contrast where you can appreciate both the “Indoor Sakura” and the “Outdoor Sakura” simultaneously.
A Moment of Pure Zen Serenity
One of the best things about Komyoin is its peaceful environment. Unlike the crowded main halls of Tofukuji, Komyoin remains a quiet sanctuary.
You can sit on the Engawa (wooden veranda) for as long as you like, listening to the silence and watching the petals drift in the garden. It is a true luxury to find such a tranquil space in the heart of Kyoto’s busy spring season.
