On November 20, I visited Kyoto’s Tofuku-ji Temple and Imakumano Kannon-ji Temple to enjoy the autumn foliage. At that time, the fall colors were just starting to peak, and they are expected to reach full beauty over the coming week.
Tofuku-ji Temple is famous for its vast grounds and historic architecture. The view of the colorful leaves from the iconic Tsutenkyo Bridge is simply breathtaking. The temple grounds also feature many charming sub-temples (tatchu temples), each offering its own unique autumn scenery. In autumn, every path at Tofuku-ji is lined with vibrant maple trees, making it a perfect place for photography.

Imakumano Kannon-ji Temple is within walking distance from Tofuku-ji, and it can also be reached easily from Sennyu-ji Temple and Unryu-in Temple. It is relatively quiet compared to other popular sites, making it a perfect hidden spot to leisurely enjoy the fall colors.
If you are visiting Kyoto during the autumn foliage season, we recommend exploring Tofuku-ji’s spectacular leaves and sub-temples first, then taking a peaceful stroll to Imakumano Kannon-ji for a quieter, more relaxed experience.

For those who want to experience more of Kyoto, combining your autumn foliage walk with a Japanese cultural experience is highly recommended. Activities such as tea ceremony or wagashi (Japanese sweets) making offer a deeper, immersive way to enjoy Kyoto in the fall.
